Why it’s Awesome: Rory Williams has just had the absolute worst day of his life. His fiance doesn’t remember who he is, he’s just learned that he’s not only dead but in fact erased from time, which is as nothing compared to learning that he’s also a killer robot made of solid plastic (rather than either a mild-mannered nurse from Leadworth OR a badass Centurion from Ancient Rome), which he in turn discovered by accidentally/on purpose murdering the girl of his dreams, and to top it all off the universe just imploded. But none of that is what makes this particular punch so awesome. Firstly, that’s the Doctor getting punched in the face there. Some of us have been waiting nearly fifty years to see the Doctor get punched in the face, so it’s about freakin time. Secondly, the Doctor’s been generally abusive to Rory all season (well, up until he died, because after that he felt bad about the whole thing), so he really really has it coming. And thirdly, because the Doctor knows this and does it on purpose. He deliberately provokes Rory into punching him in the face, in order to ensure that he’s still one of the good guys. The Doctor gets himself punched in the face, because he’s manipulative and is not above manipulating even himself. It’s like “Good for you! I totally deserved that!” And he really did deserve it, you have to admit - and Rory is still man enough to turn him around and punch him in the face, because even if you’re a twice dead killer robot at the end of the universe, you don’t hit people from behind. Not when you could punch them in the face.

When someone dies, the notice in the paper always closes with “Survived by”. I survived. I didn’t just survive the death of my husband; I also survived his last illness, a condition that was, in retrospect, the fragmentation and eventual disintegration of the man I’d met and fallen in love with five years before the stroke that would, slowly and inevitably, kill him.

It took just about four years for the stroke to kill who he had been when I met him, but four more to kill the person it had turned him into. People like to read about the edge-cases in TBI, the people who acquire synaesthesia or prosopagnosia or think their wife is a hat, but the reality is more mundane. And banal.

If I start talking about it I’m not sure I can stop. :)

In this case, it’s the Greek rather than the Latin root. The Latin homo, hominis means person like Homo sapiens, the genus and species names for humans. The Greek means “like” as in “the same”, like homophone or homonym.

On Beauty Standards

So Karnythia said something about the alienation of women from normative standards of beauty, and I wanted to share something that’s too long for Twitter.

I had braces recently (got them off in August) and I had to have some teeth pulled to make room in my jaw for the rest of my teeth to lie right. As is customary here in the land of my adopted people, I went to a jaw surgeon to have these extractions done. Now, feathered serpent stuff aside, I am a reasonably attractive woman with a reasonably attractive face. I went to a jaw surgeon to have three premolars removed before getting a bonded orthodontic appliance top and bottom (conventional braces). My orthodontist was absolutely confident he could get good, functional, attractive effects with only braces, no surgery needed.

My jaw surgeon, despite my very clear instructions at my consultation that I only wanted the premolars removed, insisted on working up an alternate “solution” that involved a complex jaw surgery. This surgery would have separated my top jaw into six to seven pieces and wired it in a completely new configuration, ditto my lower jaw, and for the piece de resistance, he would have cut the tiny bone spur that comprises the human chin off my mandible and then glued it down again in a different location to scar in place there.

Why? Not because I’m not attractive. Certainly not because it would improve the quality of my orthodontic outcome. But because I could be *more*, *differently*, and most of all *better* attractive.

He told me that after he was done, I wouldn’t recognize myself.

Our culture’s outrageous beauty standards mean you are never done making yourself more normative. Even if you are attractive, you are not done. You can do better, and if you don’t want to do better at attractive, there is obviously something wrong with you.

So what about the people who don’t have any hope at all of fitting our culture’s standards? I mean, my hair may be “bad” (gorgeous, but “bad”), but at least my skin is white and my eyes are blue, so I am absolved of a lot of baseline effort to look more appropriately female for my culture.

That’s just not right.

It’s not just a matter of opting out, for women. When women opt out of the normative, they just end up with a whole new set of standards to fail at.

A good portion of my pro-bono work is defending abused children. It’s a cause close to my heart. In the course of my work I met a man who was an adult survivor. You wouldn’t have known it looking at him. He was this gigantic Polynesian guy. Wild curly hair. I think of him every time I see Khal Drogo on GoT. He was counseling some of the little kids, and doing a fantastic job of it.

I visited his home to get his opinion on something and I noticed a little toy on his desk. It was Trolley. Naturally curious, I asked him about it.

This is what he told me:

“The most dangerous time for me was in the afternoon when my mother got tired and irritable. Like clockwork. Now, she liked to beat me in discreet places so my father wouldn’t see the bruises. That particular day she went for the legs. Not uncommon for her. I was knocked down and couldn’t get back up. Also not uncommon. She gave me one last kick, the one I had come to learn meant ‘I’m done now’. Then she left me there upstairs, face in the carpet, alone. I tried to get up, but couldn’t. So I dragged myself, arm over arm, to the television, climbed up the tv cabinet and turned on the tv.

“And there was Mr. Rogers. It was the end of the show and he was having a quiet, calm conversation with those hundreds of kids. In that moment, he seemed to look me in the eye when he said ‘And I like you just for being you’. In that moment, it was like he was reaching across time and space to say these words to me when I needed them most.

“It was like the hand of god, if you’re into that kind of thing. It hit me in the soul. I was a miserable little kid. I was sure I was a horrible person. I was sure I deserved every last moment of abuse, every blow, every bad name. I was sure I earned it, sure I didn’t deserve better. I *knew* all of these things … until that moment. If this man, who I hadn’t even met, liked me just for being me, then I couldn’t be all bad. Then maybe someone could love me, even if it wasn’t my mom.

“It gave me hope. If that nice man liked me, then I wasn’t a monster. I was worth fighting for. From that day on, his words were like a secret fortress in my heart. No matter how broken I was, no matter how much it hurt or what was done to me, I could remember his words, get back on my feet, and go on for another day.

“That’s why I keep Trolley there. To remind me that, no matter how terrible things look, someone who had never met me liked me just for being me, and that makes even the worst day worth it to me. I know how stupid it sounds, but Mr. Rogers saved my life.”

The next time I saw him, he was talking to one of my little clients. When they were done with their session, he helped her out of her chair, took both of her hands, looked her in the eyes and said: “And remember, I like you just for being you.”

That, to me, is Mr. Rogers’ most powerful legacy. All of the little lives he changed and made better with simple and sincere words of love and kindness.

Yup. The best part is that it was true.

Dr Gillian was teaching Terran marine biology there, and had been since the late 2280s. “Decker”, a V’Ger/Decker automaton, wanted to learn more about humanity, and Dr Gillian had trained up three sets of undergrads and ushered her first cohort of PhDs through their program. She wanted to go home. So V’Ger returned Decker and Gillian to 1980, where, as newlyweds Reverend Eric and Annie Camden, they took over the church in Glen Oak, California. We join them sixteen years later for the first season of 7th Heaven.

September is National Sickle Cell Disease Awareness Month

This month has been designated to reflect on the children and adults whose lives have been affected by the disease.

An estimated 100,000 people in the U.S. have sickle cell anemia, an inherited, lifelong disorder that affects the red blood cells. While the disease is most common among African Americans, it also occurs in people of Hispanic, Indian, Caribbean, Mediterranean, Middle Eastern, and South Asian descents as well.

An estimated two million people in the U.S. are sickle cell carriers, meaning that though they have no symptoms, they have inherited one sickle cell gene from a parent and could pass it along to their children. When two sickle cell carriers have a child together, there is a 25% chance that the child will be born with the disease. Although there is no cure for sickle cell anemia, treatment of some symptoms are available and early detection can lead to better management of complications.

I read the Internet like a Victorian.

In public, I pretend that I’m not even conscious the Internet *has* anything below its waist. In mixed company, I refer to comments by the term “marginalia”; even the word “comment” is a little indecent.

I have drawn skirts on all the marginalia in my textbooks, in case I might see a marginalium and become titillated or enraged by its passing resemblance to a comment.

On Thursdays, by appointment, I spend a pleasant hour with a young man in carefully disheveled Three Wolf Moon tee and pleat-front pants, and he says ignorant and offensive things to me for forty minutes and then we have a cup of tea together.

His name is Stephen. When I see him in the shops wearing stovepipe trousers and a slim, tailored Oxford-cloth shirt, we pretend we don’t know one another.

I’ve been sending out some impertinent tweets about Progressive Insurance lately, but I haven’t explained how they pissed me off. So I will do that here as succinctly as possible. There’s a general understanding that says, “insurance companies— oh they’re awful,” but since Progressive turned their shit hose on my late sister and my parents, I’ve learned some things that really surprised me.

I’ll try to cleave to the facts. On June 19, 2010, my sister was driving in Baltimore when her car was struck by another car and she was killed. The other driver had run a red light and hit my sister as she crossed the intersection on the green light.
